September 2022 found me sailing in Greece and invited to write a comment column for the ITI Bulletin. A comment piece is slightly different from an ordinary article, and the headspace that sailing gives me enabled me to set out an idea that’s been germinating in my head for quite some while. Linguists in the UK bemoan the lack of language skills there compared with other countries, and the seeming neglect that leads to it; but being forced to take an exam in a subject you don’t feel an affinity for – and therefore don’t enjoy – is also a recipe for misery.
